Celebrating Women's History Month
March is Women’s History Month. In February 1980 President Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. In 1987 Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month in perpetuity. A special presidential proclamation is issued every year to honor the extraordinary achievements of American women. Let’s remember those women, both the famous and our personal heroines, that have been such important influences in our lives. Write a letter to an old teacher, offer to do a household task, donate a book to the library in someone’s name, or write a letter to the editor of your local paper. If you’d like more information, contact the National Women’s History Project, nwhp.org, for great suggestions and resources. As Abigail Adams said to her husband John as he worked on important documents, “Don’t forget the ladies!” |
